Mock Examination

A complete IB Mathematics mock examination experience, followed by detailed marking, full solutions and an individual 90-minute feedback session.

The Mock Examination is designed for students who want a realistic assessment of their current examination performance before their school mock examinations or final IB examinations.

Students complete original TL Maths mock examination papers under timed conditions, send their work to us for marking and then meet with an Experienced Teacher to analyse their performance.

Unlike our Exam Preparation Programme, which focuses on training and improvement across a sequence of papers, the Mock Examination is primarily an assessment of the student’s current examination performance.

Two Versions

The Mock Examination is available for both Standard Level and Higher Level students.

Standard Level — SL

For students taking:

  • Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) SL
  • Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) SL

The SL Mock Examination consists of:

  • Paper 1
  • Paper 2

Both papers are completed independently under the designated time limits.

Higher Level — HL

For students taking:

  • Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) HL
  • Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) HL

The HL Mock Examination consists of:

  • Paper 1
  • Paper 2
  • Paper 3

All three papers are completed independently under the designated time limits.

What Is Included?

Every Mock Examination package includes:

  • original TL Maths mock examination papers,
  • detailed marking by an Experienced Teacher,
  • annotated examination papers returned to the student,
  • complete solutions,
  • analysis of the student’s overall performance,
  • identification of stronger and weaker areas,
  • one 90-minute individual feedback session,
  • recommendations for further preparation.

Mock Examinations are available only with Experienced Teachers.

How Does It Work?

1. Receive Your Mock Examination

The student receives the appropriate set of original TL Maths examination papers for their course.

SL students receive Paper 1 and Paper 2.

HL students receive Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3.

The papers are designed to provide realistic examination practice and assess the mathematical knowledge, problem-solving skills and examination techniques required for the relevant IB Mathematics course.

2. Complete the Papers Under Timed Conditions

The student completes each paper independently using the designated time limit.

To make the assessment as useful as possible, the papers should be completed under examination-like conditions:

  • without assistance,
  • within the stated time limit,
  • using only the materials permitted for that paper,
  • without consulting solutions while completing the examination.

The papers do not need to be completed on the same day.

3. Send Us Your Work

After completing all required papers, the student scans or clearly photographs their written work and sends it to TL Maths.

Clear scans or photographs are important so that all mathematical working can be read and assessed properly.

4. Detailed Marking

An Experienced Teacher marks the complete examination.

The student receives:

  • their marked examination papers,
  • marks for individual questions,
  • an overall result,
  • written comments where appropriate,
  • complete TL Maths solutions.

The marking is used not only to determine the student’s score, but also to identify how and why marks were lost.

This may reveal:

  • gaps in mathematical knowledge,
  • incorrect or inefficient methods,
  • incomplete reasoning,
  • weaknesses in mathematical communication,
  • calculator errors,
  • time-management problems,
  • avoidable mistakes,
  • topics requiring further revision.

90-Minute Feedback Session

After receiving the marked papers and solutions, the student has a 90-minute individual online session with an Experienced Teacher.

The session is used to analyse the examination in detail.

The discussion may include:

  • overall examination performance,
  • results across individual papers,
  • stronger and weaker syllabus areas,
  • important questions where marks were lost,
  • alternative or more efficient solution methods,
  • mathematical notation and communication,
  • calculator and GDC technique,
  • examination strategy,
  • time management,
  • recurring patterns in mistakes,
  • priorities for further revision.

The aim is not simply to provide a score.

The student should finish the process with a much clearer understanding of their current level, where they are losing marks and what they should work on next.

What Will You Receive?

At the end of the Mock Examination process, the student receives:

  • a complete set of original TL Maths examination papers,
  • detailed marking of all submitted work,
  • an overall examination result,
  • annotated examination papers,
  • full TL Maths solutions,
  • a 90-minute individual feedback session,
  • recommendations for further preparation.

Mock Examination or Exam Preparation?

The two services complement each other, but they have different purposes.

Mock Examination is assessment

The student completes the entire set of examination papers independently before receiving feedback.

The main question is:

How would I perform if I took my IB Mathematics examination now?

The result provides a snapshot of the student’s current examination readiness.

Exam Preparation is training

Our Exam Preparation Programme consists of six original TL Maths examination papers and six connected 90-minute sessions.

After each paper, the student receives feedback and has an opportunity to improve before completing the next one.

The main question is:

How can I improve my examination performance?

The two services can also be combined.

A Mock Examination can be completed before Exam Preparation to identify priorities or after the programme to assess progress.

Experienced Teachers Only

Mock Examinations are marked and discussed only by Experienced Teachers.

A complete mock examination requires more than checking whether individual answers are correct.

The teacher analyses the student’s performance across the entire set of papers and considers:

  • mathematical understanding,
  • choice of methods,
  • mathematical communication,
  • examination technique,
  • calculator use,
  • time management,
  • consistency across different areas of the syllabus.

This allows the feedback session to focus on the issues most likely to improve future examination performance.
